This is a charming small globular shaped water coupe with a white rim. The rest of the exterior is glazed in the dark reddish maroon color known as oxblood flambé. There are five finely impressed vertical lines that have a slightly darker color where the glaze pooled and which gives a segmented appearance to the piece. The glaze is perfectly applied to end just short of the base of the pot – unlike later imitations that simply let the glaze flow to the bottom then ground it off. The bottom of the piece is plain white glaze with an underglaze six character mark in cobalt blue. The mark translates as "Great Ming Xuande Year Made". The Xuande Emperor (February 25, 1398 – January 31, 1435) was emperor of China (Ming dynasty) between 1425–1435. The piece measures 2 ½” diameter at the waist and is 1 ¼” high. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks or restorations. Even though the mark is the Xuande mark, it could easily be an 18th or 19th century apocryphal honorific mark. It is possible that it is “mark and period” – however we do not have that level of expertise to claim it as such. To be conservative, we will date it to the early to mid 19th century. |
