This is a fine early to mid 20th century Peking Glass vase with an opaque milk white ground and beautiful cobalt blue flowers and butterflies in the cameo cut overlay.
Earlier examples of Peking glass had more variegated glasses as the base color. The earlier pieces also showed signs of hand carving of the second layer which left the edges of the design softer. This vase has sharp edges to the overlay blue glass that has been cut away to reveal the design thereby showing that the design was cut with modern electric cutting tools. The design is a delightful scene of flowers – one a lily, the other not identified. Amongst the flowers we find small moths and butterflies flitting about. The top has a series of lappets at the base of the neck – then a blue ring – then a top of hanging leaves that appear like palm fronds. The base has a sold band of very dark blue lappets that form a continuous sold band. The vase measures 8” tall and is 5 ¼” diameter at its widest and the mouth is 2 ½” diameter. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. |
