This is a handsome dark chocolate pottery figure of the Bodhidharma– more commonly known in Japan as Daruma. The face of this Daruma is particularly well defined and reflects the dignity and serenity of the man, The figure measures 11” high by 4’wide by 3 12” deep and dates to the 19th century, circa 1850 – 1880s. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. It is possible that the pottery is Bizen; however, it lacks the golden spots of Bizen so we will just leave it to the viewer to determine the pottery origin. The piece has a four character signature on the base that translates to "Mizuno Mokusuke". Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk from southern India who lived during the early 5th century and is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Zen (Chinese: Chán) to China. |
