This is quite stunning Japanese chawan done in a soft celadon green glaze which pools in the ribs. The bowl has a classically simple design of vertical ribs all around the piece, which taper to the base. In those rib creases one can see the darker celadon glaze where pooling occurred. We have seen similar examples of this color and ribbing style in early Chinese Longquan ware. The chawan measures 4 ¾” diameter at the top and is 2 3/8” high at the rim. It is not signed. We date it to sometime between the Taisho and mid Showa periods, circa 1925- 1960s. It is in excellent condition. |
