A handsome Japanese porcelain brush pot used by scholars to store their brushes while working with calligraphic scrolls and ink paintings. This brush pot has an outer glaze of a shiny dark cobalt blue with some relief designs of chidori birds and leaves in white glaze. The inside of the piece has an lovely scene in lighter underglaze blue of a meandering stream with a bird at one edge. The piece measures 4" diameter by 5" high and is in excellent condition. There is some light expected wear on the interior that indicates that it was used. It is not signed. We date it to any time between the late Meiji period to the mid Showa period, circa 1910-1950s. |
