An African Iron Horse Mounted Warrior – BAMANA
This is a rather abstract forged iron figure of a warrior brandishing a spear while riding on a horse. All the details are in cut out and/or coiled lines – yet the spirit of the warrior is quite distinct. These forged iron figures exhibit the technical skill and artistry that Bamana tribe blacksmiths in Mali brought to their work. They would do the smelting to get the iron from iron ore, then heat and hammer out both the tools and weapons used and the important ritual objects.

This piece measures 9 ½” long by 9” high and is 4” wide at the arms. It is in excellent condition with fine patina a areas of light rust. We date it to the early 20th century.
