This is a well-made blue and white Arita dish with a transfer design of a dragon and a phoenix. The dragon is traditionally associated with the Emperor and the Phoenix, or Ho-O bird, is associated with the Empress. Stylized clouds surround both symbols. In the center of the dish is a round reserve with a formal arrangement of three large leaves ans smaller vines. The base of the dish glazed in pure white with no decoration. The dish measures 7 1/8” diameter and is ¾” deep. It is in good condition with the exception of a small chip on the underside of the rim – barely noticed from the top or side. We date the dish to the early 20th century, possibly earlier, as transfer designs were used for Japanese ceramics as early as the 18th century. Transfer printing is a way of reproducing two-dimensional designs on ceramics. At its best it results in high-quality decoration at a low cost per unit. The design is printed onto a sheet of tissue paper or a thin pliable layer of gelatin (animal glue), by means of which it is then transferred onto the surface of the ware. |
