A Chinese Bamboo Brush Pot – Elders Playing Go– Qing
This is an intricately carved bamboo brush pot for the scholars’ desk. It has a design of three elders seated at a low table – two playing the game and a third looking on. Next to them are two standing women seemingly engaged in their own conversation. The people are in what appears to be a grotto with stalactites and directly overhead is a large evergreen tree overspreading the group. The back of the piece is not carved.

On the bottom you can see the actual bamboo node from which this rather large pot was made. The brush pot measures 9” high and is 5” in diameter. It is in excellent condition with fine old patina. There are a couple of tiny hairline cracks on the rims, but they are stable and do not extend down the sides. We date the piece to the mid to late 19th century, circa 1840-1880s, Qing dynasty.
