| French porcelain Classical Greco-Roman figure grouping with two women and three putti. Made by Max Eugene Clauss in Paris, France, c. 1868-1887. Two women each kneel upon one knee on either end of a low oval shaped earthen mound. A putti is trapped in a high domed cage which is centered on one side between the women. One of the women holds a second putti balanced upon her knee. The other woman presses upon the belly of a third putti with her right hand, forcing him to the ground as he struggles to rise with arms flailing. Finely detailed overglaze painting; each woman in floral patterned attire. The bottom surface has a dark blue underglaze maker mark composed of an "X" crossed pair of swords the letter "E" nested between the pommels and the letter "C" nested between the tips. This mark and two very similar marks are shown respectively as #894, and #895 and #896 in Rontgen's "The Book of Meissen", Second Edition. Measures 5.75" tall, 6.25" long and 4" wide. | ||||||
