Japanese Sandstone Sculpture of Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu (Chinatamanichakra Bodhisattva) The name of this form of Avalokiteshvara derives from the sacred wish-fulfilling jewel(chintami) and the Wheel of the Dharma (chakra) that he holds. Often he sits in a position known as royal ease: with right knee raised, and left leg folded. Usually, though not always, he is depicted with one head and six arms. Each of the arms represents a vow to save beings in one of the Six Realms of Rebirth: the realms of hell, hungry ghosts, animals, demons, humans, and Devas (heavenly beings). On the mandorla, it is dated clearly back to Kyouhou Period 19th (1734), Edo Period. |
