A beautifully mottled dark and light green jade carved bird form pendent. This piece is so similar to #47 in "Between Continents/Between Seas: Precolumbian Art of Costa Rica, that they may be by the same hand. The central crest on the larger mace [#47] is another bird and this one is probably a more stylized version. A superb example of the highly stylized figures of Mezcala. This is a type M22 with arms carved in relief and placed on the waist with fingers spread, the head of a tapering triangular form. Finely polished dark green speckled very hard and heavy stone (diorite) excellent condition, 5 5/8" high. Mexico Guerrero Mezcala 300-100 BC
