" features of the horizontally compressed face, and the treatment of the top of the head seem early for Costa Rica. The head has zones of incising and punctation filled with white pigment. The figure "wears" fore and aft lobes that probably indicate an extreme hunchback deformity. Highly adorned priest, standing with both hands raised palms forward, tight fitting headdress with a bird on the top, tips of wings chipped, side and central tassels, jade ear spools and necklace worn over a chest mantle with incised line patterns also the knee length tunic, plus wrist bands. A beautifully mottled dark and light green jade carved bird form pendent. This piece is so similar to #47 in "Between Continents/Between Seas: Precolumbian Art of Costa Rica, that they may be by the same hand. The central crest on the larger mace [#47] is another bird and this one is probably a more stylized version.
