Fine & Rare Chinese Chenghua Mark Doucai Chicken Cup

A fine and rare antique Chinese porcelain doucai "chicken" cup, finely potted with gently flared sides, delicately painted around the exterior in translucent enamels out-lined in clear underglazed-blue on one side with a cockerel and hen surrounded by their chicks, another group of cockerel, hen and chicks to other side, divided by iron-red flowering branches issuing from rockwork in shaded underglazed-blue, and on the other by lilies also issuing from blue rockwork, all between a double underglazed-blue line border at the rim and a single line at the base, interior and countersunk base glazed white and inscribed within a double square the reign mark of Chenghua (1465 1487). An old carved and pierced wooden stand is included.

NOTE : These famous doucai porcelain "chicken" cups were originated from the Chenghua reign of the Ming dynasty, their popularity reached its peak around the early Qing period of Kangxi and Yongzheng and much were copied at the time, some bear the appropriate reign mark whilst many were inscribed with the Chenghua mark. Copies of such cups continued into the 19th century right up to the present days. Although it is exceedingly difficult to put an accurate date to the present cup, but judging by its form, style of decoration, and the amount of wear and tear, we estimated this cup may possibly dates around the early part of the 20th century.

DATE : Chinese, first half of the 20th century or earlier.

MARK : underglazed-blue six-character Chenghua mark within double squares on base.

SIZE : approximately 3 3/8" (8.5 cm) diameter, 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) high without the stand.

CONDITION : cup in perfect condition with all round glaze wear and abrasion only, no chips, no cracks, and no repairs. A small old break and loss to the wooden stand.

SHIPPING : Inclusive.
