Superb Very Rare Chinese Jade Lion Censer, Ming Dynasty

A superb and very rare Chinese Ming dynasty pale celadon nephrite jade censer and cover on wooden stand, the incense burner exquisitely carved in the form of a Buddhist-lion, with fine detailing all around, body hollowed out, the detachable cover modeled as the head of the animal and carved separately from a different stone with a slightly darker celadon hue, the mouth pierced through allowing the incense smoke to ventilate, body of the stone of fine whitish-celadon color with attractive streaks of russet and golden tone, all raised on an old fine quality custom carved wood stand.

NOTE : It is extremely rare to find Chinese incense burner in the form of a Buddhist-lion carved from nephrite jade, where most of such censers were usually in bronze.

DATE : Chinese, Ming Dynasty, circa 16th Century.

MARK : no mark or signature.

SIZE : approximately 4" (10 cm) in length, 5 5/8" (14.3 cm) overall height including stand.

CONDITION : body of the censer in perfect condition apart from a tiny old nick to the tip of the tail, and a few natural stone fissures as expected; the cover also has natural stone fissures together with some tiny old nibs to extremities and a few small shallow chips along the rim; the wooden stand has a break to one of the foot rings only. No other damages or repairs noted.
