Unusual 18th / 19th century antique Chinese carved Zitan wood box with white jade cover, the wooden box of shaped ovoid form and superbly carved with four panels of stylized four-clawed dragons between key-fret bands around the top and bottom rims, the wood of fine dark brown color with characteristic surface pitting. The white nephrite jade cover in the form of a 'ruyi' head, very well carved in high relief with a figure on a raft with basket of flowers, drifting on a river between craggy rocks and pine trees, the translucent stone of good even tone.
DATE : Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 18th / 19th Century.
MARK : no base mark or signature.
SIZE : approximately 3 1/4" high, 5 1/8" maximum width.
CONDITION : the wooden box with an age split across the base leading to two small horizontal splits along the foot rim, the jade cover is in excellent condition with two very small and shallow old flakes to the side rim. No chips and no repairs.
