A good 19th century antique Chinese export Cantonese famille-rose elephant candlestick, the animal well modeled standing four square with head turned to one side and trunk curled, the body glazed in tones of rouge-de-fer, the back with an ornate saddle cloth supporting a trumpet vase decorated with stiff leaves and scrolling flowers. (Wooden stand NOT included) REFERENCE : Similar Chinese export candlesticks in the form of elephants, of varying sizes are known, majority of them date to the 19th century, see last image of similar elephant candlesticks sold by Sotheby's London Sale in 1992.
DATE : Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century.
MARK : no base mark or signature.
SIZE : approximately 6" (15.2 cm) high, 5 3/4" (14.5 cm) maximum width.
CONDITION : in good overall condition, some small rim chips and frits (see images), glaze chips and flakes to the tail and other extremities. No cracks or other damages, and no repairs.
