A two fold nihonga screen from the early Showa era (early 1930's) by Inohara Taika.
In response to the ominous black skies of the monsoon season an enormous eagle has inflated itself and is calling to the heavens. Vivid greens detail the hardy foliage clinging to the mountainside, the brilliant blue pigment cascading water. The setting sun is barely visible at the lower left though it casts a rich golden glow through the ink washed sky.

A framed painting of a beautiful geisha by the well-known Nakao Jun dating to the mid 20th century. A charmingly brushed ink image of a bat in flight by the highly respected nihonga artist Kimura Buzan. The bat's frequent association with the moon leads one to believe that it is present just outside the frame of the picture. The artist's signature and seal interact wonderfully with the bat, almost like a small child trying to hold on to a kite.

A six fold literati screen from the late Taisho or early Showa period (circa 1930). Read from right to left a rambling shrine complex is perched along a ridge high in the mountains. Far from being a realistic depiction of nature the nanga artist has focused on expressing nature's rhythm and movement and unusually here also its brilliant colors. Vigorously and distinctively executed with layered and puddled pigments and color on paper, the bright spring and emerald greens are a feast for the ...click for details
