| An early 20th century nihonga painting of a cat napping under a flowering hibiscus. Charming subject matter and exquisite brushwork afford the painting a traditional Japanese sensitivity, and one closely interwoven with the spring and early summer seasons. The work has been rendered on silk with ink, gofun and color. It is in very good original condition. There is one relatively mild water stain at the bottom of the brocade mounting. The scroll measures 77.5 by 21. The image measures 51 by 16 inches. It is the work of Futaba Sekka (Futaba Kotaro). He was born in 1867 in Gifu and went on to live and paint in Tokyo. He was a student of Okumura Sekiran (1834-1895) and Kono Bairei (1844-1895). He is noted as being a painter of animals and tigers in particular. | |||||||||||
