| This is a set of lacquered wooden Kushi and Kogai, comb and hair pin dated 1920-1930. The set is decorated with unusual motif, Hannya mask surrounded by sakura , cherry blossom and tuzumi, traditional Japanese drum which are drawn beautifully by artist. The surface has incredible urushi lacquer marbling patterns both sides and signed on comb and hair pin. The Hannya mask is used in many noh and Kyogen Japanese plays, as well as in shinto ritual kagura dances. The Hannya mask portrays the souls of women who have become demons due to obsession or jealousy. Origin of this name, Hannya is a Sino-Japanese word for pranjna or wisdom. One tradition states that this name was given to this mask because it was the name of an artist monk Hannya-bo who is said to have perfected its creation. Another explanation is that Perfection of Wisdom sutras and their variations were considered to be particularly effective against female demons. An alternate explanation is that the artist would need a great deal of wisdom in order to create this mask. It comes in an original wooden box. Size of comb 4.125 " H x 2 " W x 0.2" Thick ( 10.5 cm H x 5.1 cm W x 0.5 cm Thick ) Hairpin is 6.75 " Long x 0.5 " x 0.25 " ( 171.cm L x 1.3 cm H x 0.6 cm D ) | ||
