A superb scroll painting by Taiko Okamoto (1879-1945) of Jigoku Dayu, the legendary Hell Courtesan, depicted here wearing a kimono with a golden dragon rising from the sea, and with a haughty expression tempting the viewer by casually exposing her neck. Superb. Scroll size: 22 inches by 77 inches. Image size: 16 3/4 inches by 48 1/2 inches. Nicely mounted and in very good condition, commensurate with age. No major flaws. Mid to late 19th Century repousse copper table payer wheel in the form of a pagoda. The prayer cylinder, decorated with Sanskrit characters, flowers and vajras, is surrounded by a four arched columns with scrolling cloud forms. The pagoda, surrounded by a fence, sits on a weighted lotus base with a double vajra incised on the bottom. Antique Japanese Scroll Painting Late Edo, early Meiji periods Circa 1860 Finely pained on silk with natural stone ground pigments. Signed and sealed by the artist This scroll appears to have been remounted at least once. There is an old repair to the top left side of the mounting, and a few small wormage holes, mostly at the top. Scroll size 74 x 20 inches Lacquered wood scroll ends. Very nice quality mounting. Fine old 19th century E-Shino footed shallow bowl or plate for sweets served during the Kaiseki meal at a tea ceremony, Chanoyu. Robustly painted in underglaze blue, with floral rim design, drying nets and flying birds in the center. Nice thick glaze drips and iron red can be seen on the back side. This exceptionally well carved and elegant Kadai, display stand, measures 21 inches by 17 1/2 inches and is 3 inches high. Carved from a single piece of wood in the form of a lotus leaf resting on lotus roots, stems and lotus pods. The naturalistic carving, elegant lines and artistic balance of this stand could only have been achieved by a master carver. Unsigned. Late Meiji, early Taisho Period, circa 1890-1920. Intricately cut and pierced russet iron with with Islamic geometric design and Islamic script. This hexagonal amulet box was meant to hold a matching shaped miniature Qur'an, and be worn on the upper arm, close to the heart, possibly under armor for protection in battle. The interior lined in lacquered brass, with some of the lacquer still remaining, mostly on the bottom and a bit on the hinged lid. An unusually large ( Sumo Size) all ivory Kagamibuta Netsuke in 3 parts. It measures 2 1/8 inches in diameter and is 1 1/4 inches thick. In perfect condition with a nice mellow patina to the ivory. No chips or repairs, just a couple of mild natural tension cracks to the back.
