Japanese Scroll Painting of a Fantastical Beast
A most interesting Japanese hanging scroll painting of a mythological beast called Haku. The Haku are horse-like, have a single sharp horn, and thick tiger-like paws with claws instead of hooves. Their skin shines silver when hit by light. They can fly long distances faster than boats can travel them. They are omnivorous, and their voices are several pitches higher than that of horses. This painting dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, late Meiji or early Taisho period. Very nicely mounted with hardwood roller ends. 95 1/2 inches by 17 inches. In very good condition. Signature unread.
