Tsura Utsubo. Arrow Quiver with family crest. Age: Edo period. Details: This Utsubo features a gold lacquered family crest and a beautiful tiger next to a bamboo tree. Very nice details and quite unusual. Because of the materials used very few of these have survived the ravages of time. Good condition with minor lacquer loss due to age. Remarks: The bow and arrow, naturally the most ancient war implement, was also the most universal. The hilly nature of Japan, as well as the walled towns and formidable castles of the Daimyos, that must be sieged and stormed to be taken, made the bow not only a necessity but the winning factor when the opposing forces assumed the proportions of armies. Most Utsubo were more or less cylindrical containers with a rounded upper end and a lidded opening in the side near the bottom. They were worn on the right hip and held in place by straps and cords. The lid was swung aside as the arrows were taken out downwards. When not in use the lid was held shut by a strap. This piece would make a fine addition to any Samurai Armor collection. Please inquire for further details or photographs. NO RESERVE. |
