This is a rare and unusual Japanese Ivory vessel with a removable cap. This vessel is possibly a spice dispenser or opium container. A spice dispenser is more likely. This finely detailed piece came from the same estate as the Ivory/Satsuma alter set. It may have even held incense for use at the alter. The detail is excellent. This highly unusual and RARE alter piece came from a local Japanese estate. The two side carvings are Boar's Tusks. The center piece is a carving in Ivory of a Man holding a long pole with a beautiful and very old two-piece Satsuma Ball. The Satsuma Ball is painted both inside and out with some of the most delicate work that I have seen. This fine Japanese elephant Ivory carving came from the same estate auction as the Man and Boys carving previously listed and is likely from the same period. I can account for over seventy years of age for the piece. I assume that it is from the middle of the 19th century and signed. The detail is exceptional. The carving is a full 11.00" tall.
