One of the finest examples of John Jelliff’s work, renowned cabinetmaker of Newark, New Jersey (1813–1893, firm active 1836–90).
This four-piece set is carved in walnut and composed of a sofa, armchair and two side chairs. The carvings of Ansonia heads on the arms, finials and crests are the best, wonderfully done and very crisp. There is an old professional repair on the armchair side, which is barely noticeable and hardly worth mentioning. The burl and the carvings are complete with no chips. The tufted upholstery, which was done some years ago in velvet on the sofa and armchair, along with a complementary tapestry on the two side chairs, is in good condition. There are no rips or stains present, and they have minimal wear just some sun fading on the sofa and armchair. The frames are quite sturdy. Wear and imperfections are appropriate to the age of the piece. Finish: Original, excellent Circa: 1870 Dimensions: Sofa 76’’L x 46’’H x 36’’D Armchair 29”W x 44’’H x 32”D Side Chairs 22”W x 38’’H x 27”D Ask for more pictures! |
