Museum quality signed rosewood Renaissance Revival Victorian cabinet / credenza. The cabinet features burled panels, carved acanthus leaves and crest, rosettes, and finials. In addition the front has areas of gilded ormolu, along with a profusion of parcel gilding throughout the piece. A spring-loaded secret compartment is found above a cabinet door in the base, which is released by a hidden catch inside the cabinet. The interior of the cabinet is completely covered in Birdseye maple. There is a hand painted Sevres porcelain plaque on the front, as was occasionally found on the highest quality pieces of this period. On the back of the plaque is inscribed the words "Mme. Elisabeth" from the original artist. The cabinet is stenciled and signed by the maker ''Robert Renwick & Son, 92 N. Howard Street, Balto., MD". Robert Renwick was the premier cabinetmaker of the 19th century working in Baltimore. Other examples of his work are found in the Smithsonian in Washington DC. This cabinet never left Baltimore during its entire lifetime, and an old note attached inside the secret compartment “WM. Connet Coles from Bond Family” provides additional provenance. This is truly a stunning example of American Victorian craftsmanship, and is the finest cabinet we have ever had the privilege of offering.
