| Second half 17th century, 134 x 203 cm. Dark blue satin with a brocaded design of one hundred antiquities and auspicious symbols. At the top and bottom there's a pair of phoenixes. The hanging consists of two loom-widths which are joined in the middle. Condition: the whole has been professionally strengthened with a backing that includes a tunnel to put a rod through to hang it properly. The dark blue satin has an area with some (restored) holes and wear in the middle right section. There is a small missing edge in the lower left corner. There are some more smaller holes and lines of wear throughout but not disturbing. As a whole the dark blue satin is quite o.k. It is strong and subtle (thanks to the good workmanship in the period) has a nice shine and deep colour. The brocading shows considerable wear. Some details have worn away. The problem has for a part to do with the technique used: the yellowish-brown colour in the bodies of the phoenixes and the rock consists of long threads that lay freely on top of the satin. This is a typical technique for the period but of course very vulnerable for wear. Reduced in price from 3.500 euro to 1.950 euro. | |||||||||||||||
