| Portrait of an imperial censor, painted on paper (re-paneled). Dim.: 95x165cm (painting)/ 107x167cm (including border). There are no scroll-ends as it was once framed. The condition is in general very good with some filled in cracks (face and robe) but not disturbing. Green areas show corrosion probably due to the pigment used (aggressive copper green) and are partially filled in. There are no other restorations to either the painting or the paper. There's much resemblance with a painting in the HK Muwen Tang Collection. (See: Simon Kwan, Chinese Portraits, No.8, p.66) in both general atmosphere and the rendering of details. The painting is late Ming, possibly early Qing, and from the period. There's no modernism to be found in the shades of colours used or the brush-strokes and drawing. The corroded green areas are very good proof as well of it's authenticity. A comparable painting was sold recently at Sotheby's (London, november 9 2011 sale L11211 lot 484) | ||||||||||||||
