A wooden statue of Guanyin, 18th or 19th C.
A wooden statue of Guanyin sitting on a lotus meditating in her cave. At the lower end of the base there's the head of a demon symbolizing that good conquers evil. The statue most likely dates back to the 18th or 19th century but is possibly older than that. Height: 36cm. The cave was made seperately from the statue and is secured with a nail at the back. It is difficult to see whether the figure of Guanyin is one part with the base or carved as a separate part because of some repairs with fillers along the line of the possible joint of statue and base. In all probability it is a separate part though, as only the statue shows damage from insect eating. It may very well be carved from a different type of wood, for example camphor. Condition: original and complete condition. There's no other repair than the fillers mentioned. As a whole the statue looks dark from sooth and smoke. The original lacquering is for a part still in place, for a part flaked off down to older layers or to the bare wood.
