Verl. Herm. Leiser, Berlin Wilm. 9664, Deutsche Bioscop-Ges.

HOMUNCULUS was the most popular silent film serial in Germany during World War I. It's a melodramatic and expressionistic science fiction film about a perfect artificial creature manufactured in a laboratory. As in the film ALRAUNE, the creature discovers his origins and realizes he has no "soul" and is incapable of love. In his torment, he decides to avenge himself on mankind, instigating revolutions and becoming a monstrous, tyrannical dictator. Meanwhile, his mad scientist creator-father (Friedrich Kuhne) seeks to rectify his mistake. The Homunculus is played by Olaf Fønss, the Danish star of THE INDIAN TOMB (1921). This six part series was a precursor to Universal's FRANKENSTEIN and the inspiration for a host of other science fiction classics.

Directed by Otto Rippert Cast: Olaf Fönss, Friedrich Kühne, Aud Egede Nissen, Maria Carmi & Lupu Pick. Deutsche Bioscop GmbH production. / Scenario by Robert Reinert. Cinematography by Carl Hoffmann.
