This item was collected in the field in the 1970's by an Australian patrol officer. It shows considerable age, so it was well used before being collected. Note the insect damage on the front, still has some remains of pigment. Very large and heavy, about 43" tall. Iatmul people, middle Sepik river Papua New Guinea. Great tribal item.
Anita Martinez was the granddaughter of Maria Martinez ( daughter of Adam and Santana ). She was not a prolific potter, and her work is quite rare. This is a beautiful and fairly large tsubo or jar by the well known Kato Kenji. There are actually two potters by this name who are equally well known one who tend to do iron glazes ( temmoku ) and Shino ( this guy ) and the other who does a wonderful rakka or Persian blue. This tsubo is painted in free style leaves and branches similar to Hamada Shoji. Beautiful rich deep glaze, the images really do not do it justice. About 9 1/2" tall, excellent condition signed box.
