Michael Cardew and Bernard Leech were the most influential folk potters in the early part of the 20th century. They studied the ceramic arts of many regions including Japan ( where they studied with Hamada and Kawai ), China and Africa as well as very old British functional pottery to invent a new arts and crafts style.
This sake cup ( guinomi ) is signed with Michael Cardew's personal mark and the Wenford Bridge mark, most items have one or the other but not both. Not sure of the date. ...click for details
Approximately 15" tall this is one big vase. Tsujimura Kai is the son of Tsujimura Shiro, one of Japan's most respected potters. Kai's talent is equal to his father's!. This beautiful vase evokes images of the moon over trees in winter. Wonderful rich glaze, beautiful lip, perfect condition, just right for cha no yu tea ceremony. Signed box.
Carved from hard dense wood, this large ( 28" long ) shield has an unusual design. It was collected in the area of Roebourne in Pilbarra in the 1950's. It is finely incised on teh back and the front ( incising is filled with ochre and lime on the front so difficult to see in pictures ), There is minor damage and wear but overall very good condition, fine patina especially on the back indicating many decades of use.
Sakai Kobu is a Living Prefectural treasure for Gifu in Japan ( one step away from Living National Treasure or Ningen Kokuho ). His work has won many awards. He is a major innovator in Mino work, especially Shino glazes.

This is a rare item indeed. Nanyin Maymuru 1918-1969 was one of the early documented bark painters in Australia. He was a Manggalilli Yirrkala from Northeast Arnhem land and his paintings sell for thousands of dollars. His brother was Narritjin Maymuru who was one of the leading Australian painters of all time.

A beautifully simple and rare pair of Chinese Longquan porcelain pottery with celadon glaze octagonal tea cup pair. These are of the light color porcelain ceramic body variety with a fenqing powdery blue-green type thick glaze, no crackle. The octagonal shape is quite rare and highly desirable, excellent condition, no chips or cracks. About 8 cm wide by 5 cm tall. Circa 1200 AD.
Beautiful and very nicely detailed work. Shibuichi base with silver, copper, gold and shakudo highlights. The frog is copper with double inlaid eyes and inlaid spots, the lotus pod is complete with tiny seeds. Minor wear, excellent condition. 4 13/16" long, 9/16" wide and 3/8" tall. A true masterpiece.
This fine Hopi manta is much nicer than the images show, I will try to get some pictures in sunlight soon. Made from natural brown homespun wool much of which is dyed with indigo. Almost mint condition, shows slight wear at the corners. Beautiful diamond patterns in the weaving at the top and bottom. About 55" by 39".
