Japanese bamboo flute 1.8 shakuhachi by Rampo, Ranpo
This is a real find for the experienced player. Yokoyama Rampo needs no introduction in the world of Shakuhachi, he was one of the top 20th century makers. This flute most likely dates from the 1950's or 1960's. It shows signs of being played a lot and very well taken care of. Note the wear by the finger holes. Characteristics are, a complex tone with prominent overtones. Some what quiet and subdued in otsu, sings very beautifully in kan, a fine kinko flute! A bit more difficult to play than a typical modern flute but well worth the effort. Fine " old flute " sound. 1.8, D pitch, pitch is OK, Chi is sharp, tsu is about 5 cents flat. Easy to make those adjustments though. Utaguchi is horn inlay, bore is red urushi, but I think was re-lacquered at some point, also looks like nakatsugi was repaired at some point, no cracks or other repairs or restorations. Medium to narrow bore, average weight, medium size holes, bamboo slightly flat on top. The only reason that I am selling is that I have found a flute I like better ( for more money of course ) and it was a hard decision at that! Two hanko signature.
