Gandhara Relief Fragment with Woman, 2nd/3rd Century AD

Fragmentary stone relief showing a downwards looking thoughtful woman. The expressively carved head with bangs topped by an elaborate headdress. The woman is wearing large earrings and a necklace. The full bosomed woman is clad with a folded dress; a shawl wrapped over one shoulder and her right upper arm. For a marriage scene with Yasudhara standing in a pensive pose cf. item no. PM_02747, page 81 in: Ihsan Ali, Muhammad Naeem Qazi. Gandharan Sculptures in the Peshawar Museum (Life Story of Buddha). Mansehra 2008. Blue schist. Gandhara, 2nd/3rd century AD, H. 6.4 cm (2.5 in), H. with stand 13.3 cm (5.25 in). Fragmentary, fine carving. Nose damaged, forehead slightly pitted. Upper edge of the panel partially lost. Swiss private collection (data will be provided to the buyer).
