Gandhara Panel Buddha and Attendant, 2nd/3rd Cen AD

Gandhara stone panel with the Buddha and an attendant in the lower frame. The partially preserved Buddha is seated on a pedestal in the dhyana mudhra gesture. He is dressed in Gandharan style and showing a wavy hairstyle topped with the raised ushnisha. On the left a man in daring contrapposto and exaggeratedly turned upper body. The attendant is wearing a long garment and holding what could be a tambourine or an offering. The top adorned with an acanthus leaf design and a semicircular arch with a rosette on the side. In the open field at center the foot of a free standing figure. For a closely related arch shaped panel cf. item no. PM_01425, page 125 in: Ihsan Ali, Muhammad Naeem Qazi. Gandharan Sculptures in the Peshawar Museum (Life Story of Buddha). Mansehra 2008. Blue shish. Gandhara, 2nd/3rd century AD. H. 15.1 cm (5.9 in). Fragmentary, fine carving. Part of the Buddha missing, as well as the attendant on the right and the figure on top. Remains of the original red color. Root marks and soil deposits.
