Janiform Glass Head, 2nd/1st Cent BC
Dark blue glass with mold-pressed bearded male heads. Provincial Hellenistic style with neatly drawn large eyes, a prominent nose and carefully embossed hair and beard. Janiform amulets with human faces have been found all around the Mediterranean basin, often in north Africa and Carthago. The heads frequently show suspension loops on top or, as in our case, tiny perforations at the neck level which allowed to use them as heads of hairpins. For related examples cf. fig. no. 11, p. 69 in: Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe. Hannibal ad portas. Exhibition catalogue. Karlsruhe 2004. Glass. Eastern Mediterranean, 2nd/1st Century BC. H. 2.9 cm (1.1 in). Fine example. Surface with minor chipping. A cavity at the neck level. German art market, from old French collection (references/data will be provided to the buyer).
