Back view sculpture of a soldier or guardian with his head turned to the left.
The face shows an alert gaze with finely modeled features, the side of the face close to the (lost) panel behind is cursorily rendered. The man wears a tight cap with bulged edge and earrings (?). He is clad in a rhombus patterned armour or a quilted upper garment. Thick cording at the neck and the end of the short sleeves.
In Buddhist art, warriors or hunters are sometimes part of the jataka or story of ‘The Exchange of Clothes’, where prince Siddhartha swaps his rich clothes for those from a warrior or hunter who is passing by. It is by no means certain, but this is a possible background for this piece.
