| This French painting (cartoon) is a design plan for the back of an armchair or "bergere". It appears to have been painted in the late 19th century on a cotton fabric that has the feel of paper. The garden scene depicting mythical characters is painted or drawn with india ink and the girl's head is on a small piece stitched in place. This was a mistake and rather than redrawing the whole piece, the correction was just placed on top and stitched in place. The top of the drawing has a line where the back of the chair stops and the word "bergere" (French for armchair) is written at the top right corner. The drawing has been recently stretched around a frame for display. There is no damage to this drawing which measures 30" by 30". | ||
