The photo on the left shows a double portrait by John Singer Sargent of Mr. John White Field and his wife. This painting was done in the early 1880's and is in the collection of Pennyslvania Academy of Fine Arts. The image on the right shows an earlier portrait of Mr. Field by Sargent. Notice Mr. Field is blind in his left eye, which is enlarged and his right eye is focused which is a good eye. It is my opinion that Mr. Field rejected the first portrait of himself done by Sargent. This is a very unusual American portrait of a lady. The painting is oil on canvas mounted loosly on a cardboard with tacks. The painting is done in a many layered style which is similar to the style of Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917). It is marked in pencil on the back Ms. Pitts. The painting is marked in the lower right corner with a large capital R. Many of Ryder paintings have been copied; however this would be a very unusual copy. It is a very American Portrait.
