Japanese splint bamboo IKEBANA BASKET with bamboo inset and liner in a crescent moon form with applied branch decoration in relief on two sides. Beautiful patina! No damage. Height is 13 inches, width is 12 inches. Circa 1900-1920.

Sold from E. Schloss Collection, purchased at Christie's NYC- Exhibited in 2 museums in CA.  

Braying Chinese Camel, pottery, sancai glaze, Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) some restorations. This was purchased from Christies in NYC, and was from the E. Schloss Collection. It was exhibited at the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art @ La Mirada 08/21/94 and the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana CA, 10/06/96-03/16/97. This example of Chinese Funerary Art is superior to many examples in the finest museums. 22 inches in height x 18 inches in width.

TWO SEPARATE GRAY POTTERY, CHINESE HAN Dynasty Horse and Rider with a Oxford Thermoluminenscence Certificate tested in 2 places is consistent with the date (Western Jin Dynasty, 265-317 AD) purchased from Christies in Amsterdam, Holland. The rider is a "foreigner," with tunic and hat. This gray pottery piece has traces of pigment and slip. There is also a crack on one of the legs. Minor restorations. Standing in agressive postures wearing armor and flowing robes, these hand-carved wooden NIO figures from Edo era in Japan have traces of polychroming and gesso. There is damage to the outer garments and the usual pitting/cracks that normally appear with pieces of this age. Fearsome Japanese wooden MASK of HANNIYA, or "female accumulated anger expressed," with horns and bulging eyes and cheeks, jutting jaw and long teeth is frightening! The underlying color of paint is a dark purple with whitish eyes and teeth! Her hair is pulled into a twist in the center of her forehead. There is some damage to the mask overall, with loss of paint on nose, cheeks,and horns but in spite of these chips and dents, this mask makes a strong impression! LARGE Japanese "Yokogi," (used to hang pots over an inside fire to cook food)in the shape of a large CARP, (Koi) fashioned from wood. Condition is good. Dimensions are 42 inches long, the tail is 10" wide and the circumference around the body is 25 inches! Circa 1900-1920.

Japanese COPPER CANDLESTICKS with circular base and bobeche, height is 25.5 inches (64.8 cms.) Although not technically a pair because the patina is different (see photos) they have the same bold but subtle design. The design is "classical Edo era," from the 18th Century. Condition is good.

IRANIAN (Persia) solid COPPER TRAY for serving Tea with a Raised foliate edge. Strikingly beautiful with no design, the 3.5 inch (8.8 cms.) raised foliate edge makes an impression! Chinese stonewear QINGBAI, Song Dynasty, BOX and COVER, octagonal with ribbed sides, flat base and convex cover. Molded design of peony and sagittaria flowers. The glaze has pooled on the cover and produced a deeper ice-blue tone. The peony flower is symbolic of nobility & wealth. Provenance: From the Carl Kempe Collection of Chinese Ceramics, #556, purchased @ Sotheby's in London, 11/5/08, Lot #480. Song Dynasty, Condition report from Sotheby's available upon request.
