Japanese SCROLL PAINTING on silk, of the classic rocky crags and cliffs surmounted with pine trees shaped by the coastal winds, with boats bobbing on a placid bay, a wooded rocky island,followed by the distant mountains which fade into infinity! Vibrant colors, wonderful perspective, expertly rendered! A humorous depiction of the Japanese ZEN Buddhist priest who meditated in China in the mountains for 7 years, till he lost the use of his legs. Seal marked by artist (see enlargement #4) The ends of the scroll are ivory and there is the original kiri wood box. Condition, some slight wrinkles which are primarily in the border, with one in the moon behind Dharuma. The colors are vibrant. Circa, 1880-1890's. Two pages from a Japanese Book, published in 1908, entitled, "Pine Tree Park" by an artist named "Shoke." The upper fan shape depicts a large towering pine over a Tori Gate, and the second smaller fan depicts a raging stream torrent with a wind swept pine on the banks, struggling to survive. These two pages have been professionally joined and hung on hinges in Japan. Circa: 1908. Condition is excellent; no foxing. Dimensions: 9.75" x 7.75".

Vibrant and alive with action, from the grandpa and bald grandma through the middle aged to the young, vibrant and babies embraced...this scene comes alive! The print depicts a rather dark skinned Sumo wrestler tangled up with his opponent whose face is obscured. Off to the side is a Kabuki-like actor with a mask (an archer) who is prodding the wrestlers. Very animated. The artist's name is "Kimustu." Condition is good, no foxing. This type of painting derived it's inspiration from the Zen doctrine of Buddhism. The background is gold leaf laid down overlapping paper squares, mounted on a wooden lattice frame.
