An EARTHENWARE PAIR of Japanese "Nomen" or Harvest Masks, worn after the rice harvest was collected to celebrate the bounty at a festival! Modeled similarly with bulging eyes, furrowed brows and flaring nostrils, the parinated surfaces simulating bronze. Very unusual. Circa: 19th Century. Length if 8..25" x about 6" wide or 21 cms x 15 cms. Purchased from Christies, see "Asian Works of Art," catalogue, LA, 5 October 2000, Lot # 72 page 27.

Japanese ceramic standing DHARUMA with his fly whisk in hand and clearly delineated facial features, covered in his priestly robes with his toes protruding. Great attention to detail, white glaze applied to his fingernails and toenails. Chest hair, bushy eyebrows and beard are all evident.The classic gauze on the base is pure Kutani. Condition is excellent, no chips, cracks, or fritting nor restorations.
Height is 12 inches (30.5 cms.) Circa is late Meiji, 1900-1912 or early Taisho, 1912-1920.
