These Japanese IMARI matching baluster vases, circa 1890's are in absolutely perfect condition. Purchased @ Christie's in Amsterdam,(see Lot #120, Pg. 38, "Asian Ceramics and Works of Art," 8 May 2001.) Decorated with 4 shaped panels enclosing alternately a garden scene with song birds, and two dragons contesting the flaming pearl amidst clouds and foliage, enclosed by washed-blue bands below a dense foliate ground ro to the shoulder and the slightly flaring rim. Pair of Japanese Satsuma BOWLS with underglaze colbalt blue MYTHICAL ANIMALS inside cavetto. There is a "kara shishi," or lion-dog in the center, a "kirin," a "ryu" or dragon and a "hoo" or phoenix (bird) All with real gold accent marks painted in straiteted lines inside. A refreshing IMARI BOWL from Japan with two cracks which have been repaired which is somewhat visible. The central motif is a potted flowering bonsai plant, with three cartouches of a goose inside an enclosure with bamboo and other trees. One goose or perhaps a fat duck is upended downwards in the water. These same cartouches are repeated 3 times on the outside of this childlike bowl. This IKEBANA BASKET is in ovoid form with a twisted loop handle woven in diagonal plait and is signed "Gyokkosai kore zo." It is in it's original kiriwood box "tomobako" with an insription and seal mark on the inside of lid. OFFERED @ Sotheby's, "Japanese Works of Art," New York, September 14, 1999, Lot 296, page 98.

This stunning MORIKAGO,(fruit basket)looks almost new with a beautiful patina. Made by the second "best," ikebana basket artist at the turn of the century in Japan,it is of low circular form with basic twill plaiting, inscribed, "Shokosai kore zo," with a diameter of 16.12" Comes with the original kiriwood inscribed/seal marked box. circa pre 1920.

Beautiful patina but unfortunately this basket is damaged at the base (shown in photos) and two strips of bamboo have loosen from the base as well. Nice form, color but damage equals low price! Japanese SWORD, wakizashi in Hon Dzukuri Form, with Torii zori and suguha hamon, fine grain mokume, signed, "Bizen...mune" in shira saya mounts. Circa 15th century, length is 21.5 " some slight damage to blade, there is a "spider" rust mark that should be restored. I can recommend a Japanese in the US to do this for the new owner!
