Japanese IVORY OKIMONO of a doll maker kneeling next to his chest of tools holding a DHARUMA doll which he is working on and not yet finished. Some slight damage to the chest of tools, otherwise, very expressive with wonderful detail. Purchased in Amsterdam @ Christie's, see catalog "Asian Ceramics and Works of Art," 8 May 2001, Lot #50, pg. 22. Height is 1.18 inches or 3.3 cms. Circa Meiji era, late 19th Century.

SOLD 

Unique Japanese celadon earthenware OKIMONO, of a Mother and her baby "KAPPA," or "water-spirits," modeled in a tender and loving embrace! Comes with the original kiriwood box with inscribed lid. Condition is excellent with one "Kama-kizu," on the back where the glaze didn't take. Height is 4.15 inches or 10.5 cms. Circa late Edo, 1820-1850.

Japanese earthenware WHISTLE (that works) from SETO in the form of a deity with bulging eyes, long beard and pot belly partially covered with a fan. This was apparently in use in the early 19th C. as an alarm while out walking at night or perhaps just for children to enjoy in the daytime! There are some losses at the back on the right side which are shown in the pictures. Well modeled, functional and unique! Dimensions are 2 3/8 of an inch (6 cms) x 1 5/8 " or 4.2 cms. 1800 - 1868, Edo.
