| Standing in agressive postures wearing armor and flowing robes, these hand-carved wooden NIO figures from Edo era in Japan have traces of polychroming and gesso. There is damage to the outer garments and the usual pitting/cracks that normally appear with pieces of this age. However, the pose and the facial expressions are still very much intact and impressive. Height is 19" plus the bases which add another 2.5". These statues were put together that same way the larger wooden statues were built which is with many different pieces of wood. The heads were usually carved out of a single piece by a single "head specialist," who might have also done the hands aw well. Other artisans made other parts of the body and clothes. Very impressive and very Shibui! | ||
