Japanese Tennyo from Buddhist Temple,
A Buddhist "Celestial Nymph" or "TENNYO" wood carving with gilt and gesso, with copper engraved medallions, from a Temple in western Honsho, near Nigata. This 1" thick carved cedar wood religious subject of a Buddhist "angel," playing a musical instrument was depicted as early as the 7th Century in Nara, painted on a wall in the Lady's quarters of the palace. There are beautiful subtle gesso colors of pale blue, and reds in the background. Intricate detail in gold on the body and komono of the celestial nymph as she flies through the air, her feet trailing. To truely understand where this carving was placed in a temple look at enlargement #6 which shows the interior location of this type of panel inside the Buddhist temple. This picture was taken in Kamakura (ancient capital of Japan, 1185-1333 AD)inside the MYOHOJI Temple 13th Century. Circa: late Edo era, 1750-1830. Condition. There is some damage as to be expected, primarily to the background. The detail and facial features of the nymph are clear and intact. There is extremely intricate detail on the TWELVE (12) ENGRAVED copper corner pieces and medallions. Dimensions: 55 inches x 19 inches x 1.25 inches.
