| Almost identical, but not quite, PAIR of Burmese Lacquerware TEA STORAGE JARS with lids. The design around the body is called, "Ku-nan-kan-byat," or(Yunnan semicircle design)"This pattern consists of a trefoil arched freize which may appear as a single line (or in this cases, a honeycomb) of interlocking forms. The centre of the design may include a "yok-thei" or (Zodiacal Signs,in this case)The outlines of this design are expressed in black on red and are complemented by a scarcely discernible overlay of fine yellow pinhead dots (in this case, NOT visible, because of age) The lines are extremely fine and lively, more reminiscent of pen-and-ink sketching than of laborious incising." quoted from "Burmese Crafts," by Slyvia Fraser-Lu,Oxford University Press, 1994. Condition: These JARS are worn; on both Jars some of the black lacquer is showing through where the orange-red lacquer has worn off. Although the Zodiac animal signs are still quite visible. The second jar, appears a bit shorter than the other because it was cut just below the upper rim and is "missing" a 1/2" in height (although not immediately evident.) Dimensions: 9 and 8.5 inches in height and a diameter of approx. 7.75 inches. Circa: late 19th Century-early 20th. | ||
