Japanese ZEN painting Plum Tree&Sparrow/Edo
Japanese 2 Panel screen, Suiboku-gwa (literally water & black ink) painting of a Plum Tree in early bloom in Febuary with a Sparrow about to land! This type of painting derived it's inspiration from the Zen doctrine of Buddhism. The background is gold leaf laid down overlapping paper squares, mounted on a wooden lattice frame. Condition: There is some wear. There are some indentations, and one area where the edge of the paper should be glued because the edge is starting to lift up. (see enlargement # 6.) The wooden frame also lacks paint in some areas. All of these "problems" do NOT (in my opinion) detract from the striking beauty of this painting. It's color changes (from light gold to copper to darker gold) depending upon the angle of light striking the surface. Not signed by the artist who is unknown, which is typical of painting of this genre and age. Dimensions are 59.5" x 53.5". Circa: Mid to late Edo Era. 1750-1860.
