妙心寺管長 山田無文老師筆。 月明千古秋 (唐紙地)。 Yamada Mumon (1900-1988). Tsuki Akaruku Senko no Aki. The autumn moon has been always bright since the past. Abbot of Myoshinji, and Shofukuji temple in Kobe Japan. Mumon was known to receive his training from Japan's noted Buddhist monks such as Hashimoto Gyoin of Yakushiji in Nara. Yamada Mumon, has inspired many individuals where Mumon was known to have tuberculosis when he was young and had suffered a lot from his illness during his training. Mumon became a Buddhist monk from the questions concerning about life during his teenage years and his parents thought Mumon was going to college and pursue a degree in law; however, Mumon decided to become a monk. His parents at first disagreed but through a bit of persuasion relented to his yearning. According to G. Victor Sōgen Hori in the book The Faces of Buddhism in America, "Students of Yamada Mumon Rōshi say that outside the sanzen room, he looked and acted like a tiny, wispy, immaterial Taoist hermit, but that inside the sanzen room, he suddenly turned into a lion." One of Mumon's disciples is Harada Shodo, founder of One Drop Zen Monastery in Washington State. Condition:The calligraphy scroll is in wonderful condition looks almost brand new. The calligraphy is done on paper commonly used for Japanese poetry, but adds a wonderful flavor when zen calligraphy is done. The paper for centuries has been high prized for its artistic design and is expensive. There is no damages, wrinkles, or stains to the calligraphy or scroll. Scroll is mounted in the tea ceremony style arrangement and the roller ends are using wood with black lacquer coating. A wooden box comes with the scroll with authentication by Mumon's disciple. Dimensions: Scroll: 66cm x 134.5cm or 25.9" x 52.9". |
