INDO PERSIAN SPEAR OF THE MAD MAHDI WHIRLING DERVISH
One very interesting period in history is the Mahdist War of 1885 when the English fought the followers of the "Mad Mahdi" in the Sudan. They were known as the whirling Dervish because they would dance in a trance with their billowing robes fanning out in a circle. Their weapons were very distinctive. The spears were of a particularly vicious form with barbs in a variety of configurations. This is a good example, 55" long on its original haft. The has a pair of opposing barbs which could be used to snag the red coat of a British soldier and make removal after stabbing impossible. There is a fine wire wrap below the head. This is a highly identifiable form and specifically used by the Mahdists in the Sudanese War. Condition is as shown. Q71
