Born in Wigan, England, studied in the studio of John Rathbone, and mastered the rudiments of formal landscape, which would be his hallmark for his dog and animal settings. He began exhibiting at the Royal Ac. 1799, Founding member of the Liverpool Ac. in 1812-13, and exhibited there. Represented in the Pebble Hill (So. Georgia) collection of major English artists. A veneer decoration of cutting patterns of tortoise and brass on to wood, with either as a base. A fine technique perfected by Andre Boulle 1642 1732, ebeniste to Louis XIV. This piece of a mid 19th century version with a red foil back on the tortoise and with side mounted facial masks. A fine example of this type of marquetry and in good condition. 9 3/8 x 7 x 5 1/4 inches

The enamel on copper placques with center radiating geometric patterns of raised jewels and gilt scrolling is a stark contrast to the cobalt blue enamel ground color. Original cream silk lining, set on a frame of gilt metal and on raised feet. Discoloration to a few areas of metal frame and appears (under magnification ) to have a few of the raised jewels replaced. No major disfiguration to the box. Late 19th century 12 x 5.5 x 5.25 inches
